Carbon fiber polypropylene interphase modification as a route to improved toughness

چکیده
This manuscript describes the rapid surface modification of carbon fibers using small molecules for application in polypropylene composites at 10% and 40% weight fractions. Attachment an n-butylphenyl species onto fiber incorporation into homo-polypropylene resulted a significant toughness improvement, 32% 30% fractions respectively, when compared against untreated control samples. Further examination embedded length, fraction, polymer thermal properties (e.g. Tm Tc) showed no differences between treated However, it is proposed that mechanical performance changes originated from installed chemistry blending with phase. observed through experimental testing which suggests sliding interactions fiber-matrix interface has created material possesses superior ductility toughness.

Thermosets as compatibilizers at the isotactic polypropylene film and thermomechanical pulp fiber interphase
The objective of this study was to improve interfacial adhesion properties at the interface of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fiber and isotactic polypropylene (iPP) using thermoset adhesives such as phenol formaldehyde (PF) and urea formaldehyde (UF). This study also attempted to achieve fiber-to-fiber adhesion using thermoset adhesives before the molten iPP would flow into the fiber web. The fra...
متن کاملFracture Toughness of Polypropylene-Based Particulate Composites
The fracture behaviour of polymers is strongly affected by the addition of rigid particles. Several features of the particles have a decisive influence on the values of the fracture toughness: shape and size, chemical nature, surface nature, concentration by volume, and orientation. Among those of thermoplastic matrix, polypropylene (PP) composites are the most industrially employed for many di...
متن کاملPolypropylene/Graphene and Polypropylene/Carbon Fiber Conductive Composites: Mechanical, Crystallization and Electromagnetic Properties
This study aims to examine the properties of composites that different carbon materials with different measurements can reinforce. Using a melt compounding method, this study combines polypropylene (PP) and graphene nano-sheets (GNs) or carbon fiber (CF) to make PP/GNs and PP/CF conductive composites, respectively. The DSC results and optical microscopic observation show that both GNs and CF en...

متن کاملEvaluation of interphase properties in a cellulose fiber-reinforced polypropylene composite by nanoindentation and finite element analysis
The hardness and elastic modulus of the cellulose fiber and polypropylene (PP) matrix in a cellulose fiber-reinforced PP composite were investigated by nanoindentation with a continuous stiffness technique. Nanoindentation with different indentation depths and spacings was conducted to measure hardness and elastic modulus in the interphase region, which was modified by maleic anhydride-grafted ...
